Little Lessons on Fixing Mistakes
April brought on a slew of new projects big and small!
During this month, I felt like I kept creating nonstop! My first project was on a small scale for a wedding gift for some of our dear friends. We gave the newlyweds some bookmarks to pair with two books we gave as gifts. It was ‘his and her’ set so that they could buddy read their books together.
Despite this project being relatively small, it brought on a huge learning unexpected learning curve. The initial bookmark designs were perfect, I was incredibly happy with their outcome and I’d never really drawn any animals like this before. However, when I was finished I decided to try and seal the bookmarks, this is when everything went wrong. I used a water based seal (modge podge) and without realizing it smudged some of the floral pattern and the feathers on the groom swan. I was gutted and almost threw them away distraught resolved to restart the project. With some patience and encouragement from my husband, he helped me to see that I could still give the bookmarks as a gift if I made slight changes to the bride’s version to help them match. I decided to add some falling petals to make the floating flowers look intentional and create movement.
I did this and was again happy with the results enough to not scrap them. This proved a valuable lesson about sealants, and being innovative when it comes to mistakes. I am happy I decided to still give them as a gift! I hope the newlyweds loved them as much as I enjoyed making them!
